Scrimshaw Gallery 3
On the opening page of "The Second Scrimshaw Connection" by the late renouned scrimshander Bob Engnath, you will find a picture of Bob at his work table. Bob did this "self portrait" at the request of Harry Camphuysen on a Sperm Whale tooth. Bob's two books published in the early 1980's are indespensible additions to every collectors library.
Whaling scene on an elephant tusk, by David Lazarus.
Scrimshaw on a Swordfish Bill by Herman Koss.
Arctic whaling scene on a 12-inch walrus tusk, by Kat Vinn.
Stern-view of the Charles W. Morgan by Steve Strickland, on a 5.25-inch tooth.
Herd of walruses scribed on a whole walrus tusk by Sandy Brady.
Wrap-around whaling scene by Doug Fine on a 5.25-inch & 8-ounce tooth.
Wrap-around "Nantucket Sleigh Ride" scene by Mike Cyra on a 12.3-ounce whale tooth "skirt" discard (below).  The highly polished new base reveals the growth lines found in every whale tooth (left).

Victorian-era scrimshanders often trimmed-off the skirt of a large whale tooth so that tooth would stand for self-display.  The skirt was often discarded.  This 3-inch tall skirt must have come from a huge tooth.
