This scrimshawed whale tooth by Skip Rowell, is owned by one of our collecting members, who has spoken with the artist by telephone.   Rowell said the he is still doing scrimshaw, and that the subject of this scrimwork was related to a personal friend.   This Pawnee elder was named “Ruling His Sun”.  At the time of purchase, other scrimwork on elephant ivory, and a newspaper article about Rowell existed, but were not available for sale.  The current owner of this tooth believes that this was one of Rowell’s first pieces.

On page #127 of The Second Scrimshaw Connection (above left),
Bob Engnath used “Ruling His Sun” as an example of Rowell’s scrimwork.
