Scrimshaw Gallery - Carved Whale Teeth
Unique Sperm whale tooth carving of sperm whale and giant squid. The carving is one piece,  almost 7-inches tall,
and weighs over 14-ounces, so the uncarved tooth must have been substantial. Custom stand by Ken Fredericks
A Japanese-style bas-relief carving.
A carved sperm whale tooth with Abalone inlays by artist Lorraine Tuffley. She lived with the west coast indians from Cambells River, British Columbia.
This is a carved bone hair pin (right), most likely of Oriental origin, but could possibly be a Yankee-made copy.  The pink flower among green foliage looks like a lotus blossom. Panbone was often cut into thin slabs aboard ship, for making busks, letter openers, swifts, and other utensils.  This item could very well have been carved, lathe-turned, and dyed aboard a whaling ship, for use as a gift for a sweetheart back home.
A bas-relief carved, whale earbone, depicting two Orca whales stalking a Humpback whale.  12.5-ounces & 3.75-inches.
