Scrimshaw Gallery - LAJOIE Family              page 2
Bow Riders on large whale tooth signed Lajoie, depicts two dolphins enjoying their favorite pastime.  During running seas, the lowest strut on the bow sprint can swing quite close to the water, and is aptly called the Dolphin Striker.
The reverse side depicts a sailor and his sweetheart in a garden, in front of a quaint New England house.  The top cap design depicts a whaling bark and a Sperm whale.  The bottom cap depicts the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans, realm of the Sperm whale.  At the very bottom is an outline of Nantucket Island.
This is recently completed scrimwork by Susan Lajoie onto a 7.37-inch, 18-ounce tooth, depicts the New Bedford waterfront in the mid-1870s.
The view is from the deck of a Yankee whaler, as crewmen outfit a longboat in preparation for a cruise (left), while others bring aboard drinking water in oak casks (below).  In the background, other stores have been delivered, and await loading.
The reverse side (below) depicts a whaling bark just departing from the other side of the quay, where more stores & hardware await loading.

Any fellow collector wanting to commission scrimwork by the Lajoie family, can make arrangements through Al Doucette of The Whale’s Tale, New Bedford MA.  Al made this Cocobolo wood stand to compliment the shape of the finished tooth.  Al can be reached by telephone at 508-997-4233, or e-mailed at:
