Klaus Barthelmess, author of the book “The Arts of Modern Whaling”, the vessel depicted is the Dutch whale catcher THOMAS W. VINKE, fisheries register No. AM 3, which made it’s last cruise in 1963 through 1964 (southern hemisphere summer).

The artist was most likely the Norwegian harpoon gunner assigned to this ship.
